Jericho

In following with my recent pattern of “download entire series of tv show, watch, repeat with another show”, I just today finished another one of my friends’ recommendations, Jericho. I must say, between Jericho and BSG, my friends have not lead me astray.

The things that make Jericho great are the things that made BSG great. A solid story with incredible writing, characters that act and feel real, and actors that put great emotion into their roles. To be honest, I feel as if Jericho could have been the BSG story, if only told in a different time, from a different setting. Both shows are post-apocalyptic, and deal wholly with the struggle of a people, and how truly important human relationships are. I could turn this into a rant about how we treat each other today, corruption, trust, and so on, but I don’t really feel like going there at this point.

Having seen the series I must say I’m sad to see it gone. However, I’m incredibly thankful that the fans of the show during its first run took a stand and demanded a second season. And really, seeing how the first season ended, I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could let a show end like that. Oh wait, someone did…Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment for the CW. She was pretty much the nail in the coffin for Veronica Mars. Still though, with the rumor mill buzzing about a possible move to SciFi or the deal with Comcast, I remain a little bit hopeful for the future.

The problem is that the MSM has turned the vast majority of television into this mind-numbing experience that doesn’t really leave me satisfied. I love Lost, don’t get me wrong, but the way the show develops and has always developed pisses the hell out of me. They never answer any damn questions! And I’ve heard the argument about it “creating suspense” or “keeps people wanting more”. You know what shows answered questions in a reasonable amount of time and have held me with much more anticipation? Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, and now Jericho. Thank God for the SciFi network seeing a gem in BSG and letting it finish out the show on its own terms. Jericho did the best with what they were given, and ended as best they could (for now, hopefully). And goodness knows VM was cut off in the middle of a giant twist.

So to ABC, NBC, CBS (though they get cred for Jericho), and FOX…take a look at these shows. You know, the ones with the giant, rabid, and devoted fan followings. Think long and hard, and then start developing more shows like them. I promise you’ll make more money and I’ll be a happier viewer.
